Academics face a kaleidoscope of issues: pressure to gain external funds, publish, create impact, teaching demands, leadership responsibilities, and administration duties. Alongside these come having to cope with rejection, applying for promotion, and dealing with difficult colleagues. All of this in an increasingly hostile higher education environment. My approach is empathetic and pragmatic.
I am currently Honorary Professor of Gender and Cultural Studies at Brunel University London, where I was formerly the Director of the Institute for Communities and Society. I have decades of experience in Australia and the UK in researching, writing, publishing, teaching, and supervising/examining PhDs.
I can work with you to:
thrive in organisations and deal with difficult workplace dynamics
write and publish
address self-awareness, stress, anxiety, "imposter syndrome" (feelings of fraudulence or not belonging), and writer’s block
consider personal, social, and cultural issues including disability, race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality
make space and time for thinking
co-design practices for teaching and learning
identify and maintain core beliefs and values in the face of neoliberal demands.
This can include:
career planning and career change, including transforming skills from outside to inside academia and vice versa
balancing teaching, administration, and leadership with research
creating promotion, job, and grant applications
time management
establishing research groups or institutions
preparing presentations including keynotes
publishing including being “REF-able”
returning to work
combining work, life, love, and family
overcoming writer’s block
managing "imposter syndrome" (feelings of fraudulence or not belonging)
